How to Play Texas Holdem Poker
If you’re new to Texas Holdem poker or Live Holdem, you may not know how it’s played. It’s handy to learn this particular variant of poker, as most others are based on it. To begin, you will be dealt two cards from the dealer, these are known as “hole” cards and only you can see them. There will then be up to five “community cards” dealt to the centre of the table. The aim is to create the best five card hand possible from the cards you have been dealt and the cards on the table. The rankings of five card hands that you can get in Texas Holdem, in order of best to worst, are as follows:
- Royal Flush – the best possible hand in poker. Made up of 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace (all of the same suit).
- Straight Flush – a series of five cards in sequential order and all of the same suit. For example, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 of diamonds.
- Four of a kind – four of the same card (any suit). For example, four 5s.
- Full House – made up of a pair and three of a kind. For example, two Aces and three Kings.
- Flush – five cards all of the same suit. For example, 4, 6, 8, 10 and Jack of Clubs).
- Straight – five cards in sequential order and any suit.
- Three of a kind – three of the same card. For example, three 8s (any suit).
- Two Pairs – two pairs of different cards. For example, a pair of Jacks and a pair of Queens.
- Pair – two of the same card (any suit).
- High Card – when you have none of the above, the only hand to play is a high card. Ace, King, Queen and Jacks are the only ones worth playing.
- Make the best five card hand you can and take the pot for yourself!
Differences between Omaha Poker and Texas Hold’em Poker
Texas Hold’em poker and Omaha are very similar in lots of ways, but there are some differences between the two. Below, we’ve outlined what the main differences are:
- The betting – both versions can be played with any betting structure, however No-Limit Holdem is the most commonly played version, whereas Omaha is generally played with a Pot Limit.
- Hole cards – in Holdem, you are initially dealt two cards by the dealer. However in Omaha, you are dealt four hole cards rather than two, giving you more chance to land a good hand.
- How you play your cards – in Holdem, you can make your five card hand out of any of the two hole cards you’re dealt and the community cards (up to five). In Omaha poker, you must use only two of your four whole cards and three of the community cards.
Top 10 Starting Hands in Texas Holdem Poker
When playing Texas Holdem, there are certain hands that can be dealt that put you at a big advantage over your rivals at the table. The top ten starting hands in holdem are:
- Two Aces – known colloquially as “pocket rockets”, the best two cards you can be dealt
- Two Kings – also known as “cowboys”
- Two Queens – can also be known as “ladies”
- Ace-King (suited) – although not a pair, it leaves you with a good base to build from.
- Ace-Queen (suited) – same as above. There’s potential for a straight flush, flush, or straight
- Two Jacks – also known as “fishhooks” or “hooks” for short
- King-Queen (suited) – two strong cards allowing for a variety of potential hands
- Ace-Jack (suited) – same as above. Good chance to land a strong pair on the flop.
- Ace-King (not suited) – chance for a strong pair or even a straight.
- Two 10s – the only non-face cards in the list. A fair enough pair to stay on and at least see the flop.
